Community Values:
Integrity | Unity | Education | Responsibility | Health | Security | Communication
Mika started working in Baker in the summer of 2008. Baker Street’s neighborhood boundaries are the 1200 and 1300 block of Baker in between Fairview Rd. and College St. in North Costa Mesa. Along with Mika staff, volunteers from Harbor Trinity Church walked up and down Baker St. getting a feel for the community and starting to build relationships with neighbors. The Neighborhood Action Committee started meeting in January of 2009 and soon started building relationships with each other as neighbors and friends. Mika’s church partners for Baker are Harbor Trinity Church and Iglesia El Camino. Both congregations have played significant roles walking alongside their neighbors as friends and by hosting English Classes, Healthy Relationship seminars, a Health Fair, and a Legal Fair.
The Baker neighbors love getting together to celebrate, plan, and collaborate to improve their community. They have seen major physical improvements from regular clean up days and advocacy in the city to fix pot holes in their allies. You can often find the Costa Mesa Police and other city leaders stopping by to visit with the community and stay proactive in building a better neighborhood.
Baker neighbors are committed to caring for one another and supporting each other through some of life’s toughest struggles. Weekly fundraising through a neighborhood Kermes has created an emergency fund for neighbors in need. Donations from neighborhood leaders are used to provide tangible systems of care and support.
Unidos en Baker have collaborated with the neighborhood association across the street, Halecrest and Hall of Fame, on several occasions including National Night Out and the Costa Mesa Community Picnic. Friendships have been formed between these two neighborhoods that reach beyond community events.
Unidos en Baker are currently working on a three year strategic plan.
