Recently, one of our Conversation Families described meeting their partner family like getting set up on a blind date.
Conversation Families is an opportunity for families to build a relationship with one another, share their native language, and practice the other language. Families are from Mika’s neighborhoods and partner churches. The two families connect once a month switching off who hosts. The native language of the host family is the primary language spoken at that gathering.
Our pilot families, Arbinis and the Trujillos had a lot of the same insecurities going into their first meeting.
Jill Arbini shared with me, “Before meeting our partner family, we were excited about the opportunity to share language and culture, but also nervous that our broken Spanish and different life experiences would hinder the relationship from developing. We anticipated this "program" as a good way to become better at speaking Spanish, but it is so much more. As we've spent time getting together and navigating this new experience, we're recognizing this isn't a program, but it's a relationship that we spend time intentionally developing.
Not only have the Arbinis taken this relational step, they also financially support Mika.
“Our family gives to Mika because we believe we've been called to love our neighbors both tangibly and relationally. More than that, we love Mika's focus on developing relationships and relying on community leaders to help form the programs and identify the resources that will make the most impact. Mika's commitment to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly, is an example to us and our kids of what it means to love God and love others, especially our neighbors in Costa Mesa.”
We are grateful for partners like the Arbinis and Trujillos that have invested as a family in Mika’s work.
