Purpose
The purpose of Mika’s Volunteer Department is to offer opportunities to act, love and walk within the community of Costa Mesa.
Approach
- Educate and inform volunteers on the challenges and opportunities facing low income neighborhoods in Costa Mesa.
- Utilize the gifts and resources of individuals to match volunteer opportunities.
- Equip, train and empower volunteers to effectively build relationships through their volunteer experience.
- Recognize and appreciate the invaluable contribution volunteers make to Mika and to Costa Mesa.
Procedure:
- Download volunteer forms and submit by email or mail them to our office address located at the bottom of the application
- Schedule a visit to the Mika office or program site for an interview and tour
- Visit a Live Scan location to be fingerprinted before volunteering begins

Opportunity
Youth Development:
Express Yourself Art Teacher
Description: Elementary and teen students indulge in creativity through visual and performing arts while learning about the Creator and their unique gifts.
Date/Time: Fall Session, September 15 – December 10
Mondays & Wednesdays 4:30pm – 8:30pm
Commitment: Minimum 1 hour a week for 12 weeks
Hope Center Tutoring (Centro de Esperanza)
Description: This after school tutoring program offers academic support and encouragement four days a week for students K-12
Date/Time: Fall and Spring School Semesters
Monday – Thursday 4:30pm – 7:30pm
Commitment: Minimum 1 hour a week for the full semester session
Niños del Rey
Description: Niños del Rey is a fun filled sidewalk Sunday School. Kids learn about God, his Word, and his love for them. It is a great way for our youngest neighbors to learn to care for each other and their community.
Date/Time: Shalimar – Wednesdays 6:00pm – 7:00pm
Maple – Thursdays 6:00pm – 7:00pm

Christian Surfer’s Outreach (CSO)
Description: CSO is an opportunity to provide children an enjoyable safe surfing experience that builds their self-confidence and to teach children about God’s creation, the ocean, and respect for our physical world.
Date/Time: 2nd Saturday of the months May – September 9:00am – 1:00pm
Commitment: One day a month
Job Club
Description: Teens learn the basics of securing and keeping a job through this six week summer program. Students get to learn on the job while working with local business partners. Skills learned include budgeting and saving, interviewing, and customer service.
Date/Time: Summer Program Schedule
Commitment: Minimum 3 hours, one day a week
Mentoring
Description: Be someone significant in a student’s life by showing them your day to day life. Mentoring a child can be a difference that changes his/her life and yours.
Commitment: Minimum 1 year commitment
Neighborhood Development:
ESL – Teach English as a Second Language
Description: English classes are taught by volunteers in each of Mika’s target communities. ESL curriculum is used; experience is preferred but not required
Date/Time: Days and times vary based on volunteer availability
Commitment: 1 hour a week for 12 weeks
Health, Legal, Business and Finance Professional Teams
Description: These are teams of professionals in the above mentioned categories available for free trainings and workshops offered on a semi-regular schedule in our target neighborhoods
Date/Time: Vary
Commitment: 2-3 hours, 1-2 times a year
